Historic Homes, Modern Bathrooms: Remodeling Across Riverside

Riverside sits inside one of Jacksonville’s largest historic districts, and many of its houses were built before current bathroom layouts became standard. Original baths can be compact, sometimes tucked under a stair or set between bedrooms, and some homes still rely on a single full bathroom. We work within the layout your home actually has rather than assuming a standard footprint.

In practice that can mean opening up a tight tub alcove, replacing a cast iron tub with a walk-in shower, or cutting back plaster and lath carefully so the surrounding wall stays intact. Homes in the district often sit on pier foundations with a crawl space below, which affects how drain lines can be rerouted. If you are comparing options across the wider city, our Jacksonville bathroom remodeling services cover the full range.

We work throughout Riverside and the streets running down to the river, from Five Points and the Park and King shops out toward Willowbranch. We also cover nearby Avondale, Ortega and San Marco. Wherever you are, you get a written quote for your specific bathroom and the scope you approve.

What We Install in Riverside Bathrooms

Walk-in showers, tub-to-shower conversions, bathtub replacement and full bathroom remodels. In an older Riverside home a tub-to-shower conversion is a common choice, because removing the high tub wall makes the bathing area easier to step into and use without changing the room’s footprint.

Remodeling a bathroom in Riverside

Water supply in Riverside

Public water through JEA covers Riverside, which makes the material conversation simpler than it is in the parts of the region on private wells. What matters here is traffic and ventilation rather than water chemistry. A room used by two children every morning ages differently from a guest bathroom, whatever it is finished in.

What the houses are like

Much of Riverside predates slab construction, so bathrooms here usually sit over a crawl space with the drain reachable from below. That makes layout changes more feasible than they are in the newer subdivisions. The trade-off is that older walls and older framing mean more of the plan depends on what turns up once the tile comes off.

Where we would start

The first thing worth deciding is how much of the room's character you want to keep. Trim, fittings, proportion and color are what make a period bathroom feel right, and none of them are structural. The waterproofing, the extraction and the surfaces behind all of that can be entirely current without the room reading as modern.

Access and scheduling

Older Riverside streets were not laid out for a work van and a dumpster, so we plan the logistics with you rather than turning up and improvising. It affects the schedule more than the price.

Permits

Expect a permit for anything that moves or alters plumbing in Duval County. Keeping fixtures on their existing connections does not automatically mean no permit is needed, so we check rather than assume, and you can verify with the City of Jacksonville.

We are so appreciative for the craftsmanship, knowledge in their field and care they put into all of the details during our Master Bath remodel. They were hard working, punctual, respectful and caring. They were a joy to have working in our home. The camaraderie between Chris and Christian on the job site was fun to listen to. We fired the 1st company hired to do our remodeling due to lack of craftsmanship and communication on the 1st shower. Frontline did not disappoint, Christian would usually respond to a text within minutes. These 2 came to bid the job, and arrived to do the work. So rare these days to not have a 3rd party coming into your home blind and oblivious to your needs and wants. Thank you guys, much success on all of your endeavors. We will pass your name and number to anyone interested in bath remodels❗️❗️

We recently completed a bathroom remodel and couldn’t be happier with the results. The workmanship was excellent, the materials were high quality, and every detail was handled with care. The team was professional, punctual, and respectful of our home throughout the process. The project was completed on time, and the finished bathroom looks beautiful, modern, and functional. We would highly recommend them to anyone considering a bathroom renovation.

Frontline Home Interiors is the definition of craftsmanship, integrity, and dedication. From the very beginning, it was clear that this isn’t just a job to them, it’s a standard they take personal pride in upholding. What impressed me most was their work ethic. Every detail mattered. They didn’t rush. They didn’t cut corners. They approached the project with a level of care and precision that you rarely see anymore. You could tell they genuinely care about the outcome, not just finishing the job. If something wasn’t perfect, they fixed it without hesitation. If there was a way to improve something, they did it even when it required extra time and effort. Their dedication shows in the small things: the clean lines, the flawless finishes, the way everything is aligned and balanced. They treated my home like it was their own. The pride they take in their work is obvious, and that pride translates directly into quality. Communication was consistent and honest throughout the process. They were transparent about timelines, respectful of my space, and committed to making sure I was completely satisfied before considering the project complete. That level of accountability is rare. Frontline Home Interiors doesn’t just deliver results they deliver excellence through discipline, precision, and genuine care for their craft. If you want a company that stands behind their work and puts their name on it with pride, this is the team you call.

We first found Chris on Thumbtack and So Glad we did as we bought a condo in Hilton Head and it needed HELP. CHRIS WAS THE MAN FOR THE JOB as he and team worked tirelessly to transform a 1.5 jack and Jill bathroom set into 2 full bathrooms complete with tile. He was great as he fit us in when other jobs he was working on had delays and also worked many weekends. We also utilized his skills to help build out a closet in another part of the condo. Mind you he did this while just meeting us on the phone while he was in HH and we were out of state. He also played well with other as we needed our electrician to assist with some old incorrect wiring. Just can’t recommend him enough (although my wife feels like she is a better painter) that said she is a great painter. Altogether he was on time on budget and super flexible. We love him and fully recommend him and his team!!!!

Frequently asked questions

Does a shower replacement in Riverside need a permit?

Often it does, and it is worth checking rather than assuming either way. Duval County generally requires a permit for plumbing changes and relocations. A replacement that stays on the existing connections may still involve permitted work depending on what is altered, so confirm your specific Riverside project with the City of Jacksonville.

Is plaster and lath a problem in Riverside homes?

Not a problem, but it is slower. Plaster over wood lath has to be cut back carefully rather than simply pulled, and it makes considerably more debris than drywall. A Riverside quote that has not accounted for it is a quote from someone who has not looked at the room.

Can you make the shower easier to step into?

Yes, and it is one of the more common reasons people do this. Low-threshold and barrier-style pans are chosen at the start rather than retrofitted, so it belongs in the first conversation along with door width and grab bar backing.

Do you serve Riverside?

Yes. Riverside sits inside our Duval County service area, and we also work across Mandarin, Arlington, San Marco and the Westside. Bathroom remodeling is all we do, so the visit is a technical look at your room rather than a sales call.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. The consultation and the written quote are free, and the quote is written for your specific room after we have seen it rather than estimated from a description.
